Daily Forecast

I've been meditating pretty regularly in the mornings. I find that these few minutes of stillness in the morning, before I start any project or speak to any one, are really helpful to collect not only my thoughts, but also my feelings. I think of this as a "daily forecast." With no other distractions, I can concentrate on how I am feeling right now. It's sort of like going to the weather channel.com and checking the local weather. Is it sunny? Partly cloudy? Chance of rain?

By really tuning in, I can discover what lies beneath the surface. Am I fairly calm, but with an undercurrent of anxiety? Is it a day when I feel rushed? Am I happy or sad? Focused or flustered?

With this knowledge, I can consciously go about my day, aware of the feelings I immediately have. Of course these feelings may change during the day, but at least I have a forecast I can go by.

It's really helpful to read forecasts. That way, you know how to dress. Is it rainy? Definitely close toed shoes. Chilly? Bring a jacket. Warm? Shorts today.

The same applies for emotions. Given that morning awareness, I can set myself up for the day, "dress" appropriately, and hopefully be prepared, as much as I can.

Taking the time to read my emotional daily forecast really seems to make a difference, as I feel I can more appropriately handle what comes my way. It's like taking a long, deep breath before a public speech. I am as prepared as I am ever going to be. The rest of the day is up to me.
