Trying New Things

Trying new things can be scary. I liken it to taking a bath. When you are in the bath, it's all warm and cozy, and you feel so relaxed and content. But you know that, in a little while, the water is going to become lukewarm, and your hands are going to get prune-y. So you know that you can't stay in that bathtub much longer. But the one shoulder that's sticking out of the water knows that, in reference to the water you are in, the room temperature is lower. It's a bit of a shock. "Should I get out?" you ask yourself. You waiver. You could turn on the faucet and add more hot water, but that's just delaying things (and I don't know about you, but I have one of the smallest hot water tanks ever, so if there's any hot water left after filling up the tub, it's a miracle). So you take that leap, step up out of the bath, and realize the temperature isn't as bad as you thought. It's actually quite pleasant (let's assume it's either summer or you have a good heating system running).

Yesterday, when I was in the supermarket, I had on my list "garlic salt". This is something I add to a lot of what I cook. It's familiar and I think it tastes good. I was about to buy the same brand, same size of garlic salt, when I realized that there's tons of garlic salt options, brands, and even things similar to garlic salt, like onion salt and garlic powder. So I opted for the garlic powder. Is it going to give me the same exact flavor as the garlic salt? Probably not. Will it still work for making garlic bread and flavoring soups and meats? Most likely. So I'll give it a try for a while.

During the weekend, my husband and I were able to visit another grocery store other than the one closest to us. It has totally different things...perhaps similar to what our local store has, but it's still different. Even a different brand of black beans has something about it that's more exciting when you open the cupboard than the same old brand. It motivated me to try something different when making black bean soup. Yes, it took a bit more time to discern what ingredients would go well together in the soup, yes, it's a little scary, but it's like stepping out of that bath and realizing everything is ok.....and perhaps even better.
